The New York Yankees are in the midst of a five-game losing streak in which they've struggled to produce, and outfielder Cody Bellinger has a simple suggestion to improve the situation.

"We gotta be better," Bellinger said following Monday's 7-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers.

"We've got a lot of talent in this room," he added. "We can do this."

New York has scored 12 runs in its last five games, which came against the Tigers and Boston Red Sox - struggling teams mired in down years. The Yankees set a franchise record Monday by getting three hits or fewer in four straight games.

Their lineup has been without captain Aaron Judge, who's sidelined with a stress fracture in his rib cage, and available players such as Bellinger (.396 OPS in his last 12 games) haven't picked up the slack.

"There's no excuses. I need to be better," Bellinger said of his recent performance.

He added: "Ultimately, I gotta be better, and I can minimize those mistakes."

On June 17, the Yankees held a 3.5-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays for the top spot in the AL East after winning their fourth straight contest. That lead has since evaporated, and the Rays now own first place in the division by 1.5 games.
