The Pittsburgh Penguins signed forward Evgeni Malkin to a one-year contract extension with an average annual value of $5.5 million, the team announced Tuesday.

Malkin's extension also includes $500,000 in bonuses for games played, $1 million if Pittsburgh makes the playoffs, and $500,000 for each round the team wins, sources told TSN's Chris Johnston.

Next season will be Malkin's 21st campaign with the Penguins.

The 39-year-old tallied 19 goals and 61 points in 56 games this past season. The three-time Stanley Cup champion has spent his entire career in Pittsburgh and ranks in the top three in franchise history in games played, goals, assists, and points.

Malkin was set to become an unrestricted free agent July 1. He carried a $6.1-million cap hit last season.

Sidney Crosby said in April that he hoped the Penguins would bring back Malkin. The Russian was apparently frustrated in February by a lack of contract talks, though general manager Kyle Dubas affirmed in May that he "would love" to have Malkin return.

Pittsburgh ended a three-year playoff drought this season but was ousted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round.
