The Cleveland Cavaliers plan to retain head coach Kenny Atkinson despite being swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals, sources told The Athletic's Joe Vardon.

No major changes to the Cavs' front office or coaching staff are expected as well, adds Vardon.

Atkinson guided Cleveland to its first conference finals appearance since 2018.

The 58-year-old holds a 116-48 record over the past two seasons and won NBA Coach of the Year during his first campaign in charge.

Multiple Cavs players voiced their support of Atkinson following Monday's season-ending loss to the Knicks, including James Harden.

"He understands his team," Harden told reporters postgame, per ESPN's Jamal Collier. "Of course, somebody's going to have to take criticism, whether it's myself or Kenny or whoever, the entire team. They're going to put it on somebody.

"But I think for Kenny, he did an unbelievable job of getting me acclimated as fast as possible to understanding what I'm supposed to be doing out there. It's just an unfortunate situation. Any team coming off of a tough, two series against two defensive monsters, it would have been challenging."

Atkinson went 118-190 in his previous head coaching stop with the Brooklyn Nets. He's also served as an assistant for the Knicks, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, and Golden State Warriors.
