Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa suffered a significant left ankle injury and could miss weeks or potentially months, a source told MLB.com's Brian McTaggart.

Correa was scratched from Tuesday's lineup against the Los Angeles Dodgers after suffering the injury while taking swings in the batting cage.

The 31-year-old is set to see a foot specialist Wednesday.

"Carlos is a cornerstone in this clubhouse," first baseman Christian Walker said postgame. "The guys lean on him. We look to him for leadership. I know that his presence will continue to be felt, but we're just going to continue to pray for him and stay positive."

Correa is the 14th Astros player to sustain an injury this season, with key pieces such as Jeremy Peña, Hunter Brown, and Josh Hader already sidelined.

Correa is hitting .279/.369/.418 with three home runs and 16 RBIs in 32 games this season. He rejoined the Astros at last July's trade deadline after spending the first seven years of his career in Houston.
